Sustainability means different things to different people.
The most commonly accepted definition of Sustainability is from the 1989 World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission):
“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.“
The concept of sustainability usually includes three pillars: environment, social, and economic development.
"EURO 2008 based itself upon the three pillars of sustainable development: environment, economy and society / culture"
"Managing the social, economic and environmental impacts and opportunities of our Games to produce lasting benefits, locally and globally."
"Sustainability is about making positive and lasting changes in the way we use natural and human resources to improve quality of life for all; now and in the future…"
"Sustainability thinking has progressed from 'development-at-all-costs', through a more balanced outlook on the need to support the environment and communities, to the more recent acceptance that that neither society, nor local or global economies, can function without a healthy planet."
